A Fiery Twist on a Classic Comfort Food

Craving something a little different for dinner tonight? This recipe takes traditional potato gnocchi and gives it a spicy, ring-shaped makeover. It’s a fun and flavorful dish that’s surprisingly easy to make. The heat from the chili flakes is balanced by the creamy potatoes, and the crispy exterior of the gnocchi rings adds a satisfying crunch. Serve these with your favorite dipping sauce, or just enjoy them on their own.

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

For the Gnocchi Rings:

  • 2 lbs (about 4 large) russet potatoes

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting1

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 2 tsp red pepper flakes, or more to taste

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

For Frying (optional):

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Boil the potatoes in their skins until they are fork-tender. This helps prevent them from becoming waterlogged.

    • Once cooked, drain the potatoes and let them cool slightly. Peel the skins off while they are still warm.

    • Use a potato ricer or a fork to mash the potatoes until they are smooth and free of lumps. It’s important to do this while they are still warm to achieve the best texture.

  2. Make the Dough:

    • On a clean, floured surface, create a mound with the mashed potatoes.

    • Sprinkle the flour, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan cheese over the potatoes.

    • Create a well in the center of the mound and crack the egg into it.

    • Gently begin to mix the ingredients from the outside in, kneading the dough for just a few minutes until it comes together. Avoid over-kneading, as this can make the gnocchi tough. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.

  3. Shape the Gnocchi Rings:

    • Divide the dough into four equal parts.

    • On a lightly floured surface, roll each part into a long rope, about 1/2 inch in diameter.

    • Cut the rope into 1-inch pieces.

    • To form the rings, gently press your finger into the center of each piece to create a small hole, then pinch the ends together to form a ring shape. You can also use a small, round cookie cutter to make more uniform rings.

  4. Cook the Gnocchi:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil.

    • Carefully drop the gnocchi rings into the boiling water in batches. Do not overcrowd the pot.

    • The gnocchi are done when they float to the surface.2 Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on a plate.

  5. Finish and Serve:

    • Pan-Fried (for a crispy texture): Heat the vegetable or olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the boiled gnocchi rings in a single layer and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

    • Serve the hot gnocchi rings immediately. They pair wonderfully with a simple marinara sauce, a creamy garlic dip, or even just a sprinkle of fresh parsley and Parmesan cheese.

Enjoy your delicious and spicy gnocchi rings! They’re a perfect dish for a cozy night in or a fun twist to share with friends.
